Dawgs Drop Two to Start Season

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball came up empty on the opening day of the season with losses to Pitt State and Central Oklahoma at the Edmond First Pitch Classic.

The Dawgs were victim to a walk-off in the season opener, before getting out slugged in the nightcap.

The weekend concludes tomorrow with the third and final game. SWOSU will battle Emporia State beginning at 1:00 pm after the schedule was moved up to accommodate a light malfunction at the UCO field.

Game One – Pitt State 2, SWOSU 1

After the aforementioned light problem postponed the game on Friday night, the two teams met back up Saturday morning to pick up where they left off.

Both starters from Friday did not return to the mound on Saturday. For SWOSU, it was Jackson Phillips who pitched a clean first inning on Friday for his final line.

Grant Ewy got the nod to begin Saturday's action and gave the Bulldogs a strong showing. He threw 6.0 innings and did not allow a run until his final inning of work when the Gorillas manufactured the game-tying run with two outs. His final line showed seven strikeouts, no walks, and just three hits allowed.

Ewy gave way to Patrick Babcock in the eighth who got into some trouble after getting the first two outs quickly. Ernesto Hidrogo came on and ended the threat, but continued to pitch in the ninth and was handed the tough luck loss after PSU delivered a walk off hit with one out following a lead off double to start the inning.

The Dawgs managed just two hits in the opener off the bats of Reece Burke and Alec Worden.

Emilio Trevino scored the lone run of the game after a throwing error pushed him to third base and a wild pitch brought him in.

Game Two – UCO 10, SWOSU 2

In the nightcap, SWOSU still could not fully wake the bats up after finishing with just four hits.

The Bulldogs did jump out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a Geoff Marlow solo home run, his first of the season.

UCO answered back though in their half of the third inning with three runs and followed them up with four more in the fourth. The Bronchos used a pair of extra-base hits, a double and a home run, to do most of the damage.

Trailing 7-1, the Dawgs got one run back in the fifth inning but did not muster any more scoring offense the rest of the way.

Four pitchers saw action in the contest. Matt Milner got the start and threw 3.2 inning before giving way to the bullpen. He was handed his first decision loss of the season. Philip Sanders, Jace Edlen, and Andrew Beissner all saw action our of the pen. Each pitcher allowed at least one run.

Offensively, three of SWOSU's four hits went for extra bases. Aside from Marlow's dinger, Alec Worden and Emilio Trevino both doubled. No Bulldog had a multi-hit game.
