Bulldogs Come Up Short at Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY – SWOSU Men's Basketball has now been on both sides of a one-point game this season after suffering a 65-64 loss to Oklahoma Christian on Thursday night in the final non-conference regular season game of the year.

The Bulldogs had two free throws with a chance to tie or win, trailing 65-64 with less than a second to play but ended up missing both to lose. SWOSU's final possession, trailing by the same score, began with just over 30 seconds left to play where the Dawgs got three shots off thanks to offensive rebounding with nothing to show.

SWOSU erased a 10-point second half deficit down the stretch to make things interesting in the closing minutes. The Bulldogs trailed 37-31 at halftime after leading 24-17 in the early going.

For a second straight game, the offense finished at sub-40% shooting at 36.5%. It's the lowest shooting percentage of the season. However, on defense, the Dawgs limited OC to an identical 36.5% shooting which is the second lowest opponent percentage through eight games.

After a 4-of-9 start from beyond the arc in the first half, SWOSU shot just 1-for-11 after the intermission – finishing 5-of-20 (25%) overall from deep.

SWOSU turned the ball over 12 times in the contest, compared to just six from OC.  The Eagles' 13-6 edge in points off turnovers proved to be one difference maker. The Bulldogs also outrebounded their opposition for a third consecutive game, finishing 47-40 in favor of the visitors.

Ben Smith and MJ Warrior both finished with 16 points apiece to lead the offense. Smith was one rebound shy of a double-double but shot just 25% (4-of-16) from the field on the night. Warrior's scoring output was a season high, while his eight rebounds sets a new career best.

Mark Berry did notch a double-double with 12 points and career high 14 rebounds.

SWOSU welcomes Southern Nazarene to Weatherford this Saturday for more GAC play. Tipoff for that final game before Christmas Break comes at 3:00 pm inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
