Soccer Bows Out of GAC Tournament in Double Overtime

SHAWNEE, Okla. – SWOSU soccer entered the postseason on Thursday afternoon facing top-seeded Oklahoma Baptist in the GAC Tournament Semifinals. After a scoreless 106 minutes, OBU scored with a little over three minutes left in the second overtime to knock SWOSU out of the tournament.

SWOSU's 2023 season ends in heartbreaking fashion. The loss finalizes their record at 5-11-3.  It's the ninth straight season the Bulldogs have competed in the conference tournament.

The game seemed to be destined for a shootout. Neither team could manufacture good attempts at an attack in overtime, until the 106th minute. A header from a few yards in front of the goal caused goalkeeper Terra Rybuck to dive and attempt a save, but the ball bounced right to another Bison attacker for an easy rebounded goal.

The top-seeded Bison brought the attack to the Bulldogs in the first half. SWOSU allowed OBU to control the midfield. This allowed OBU to get out in transition and they got multiple tries at the goal from this. None of these tries came to fruition though as the game was still 0-0 at the break. SWOSU was outshot 8-4 in the opening period.

SWOSU opened the second half more competitive on the offensive end. They got their best opportunity of the game in the 59'. Philippine de Sancy had a chance to score off a free kick in almost the exact same spot she hit the game winner against the Bison last week, but her shot was deflected. With the game still deadlocked a 0-0, Oklahoma Baptist made a couple final pushes into SWOSU territory late in the half. Terra Rybuck made clutch saves to stave off the attacks and send the game into overtime, where OBU ultimately advanced.

Oklahoma Baptist outshot the Bulldogs 20-10. The Dawgs offense attack faded towards the late portion of the game, only attempting one shot in both overtime periods combined.
