WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU led visiting Southeastern 80-77 in the closing seconds of regulation before a Savage Storm three-point shot forced the game into overtime where they would go on to steal a win from the Bulldogs.
Both sides held double-digit leads at some point in the contest. Southeastern opened up a 10-point lead midway through the first half before it was inevitably erased by the halftime. Then, in the second half it was SWOSU who led by 12 with 13:15 to play and Southeastern who clawed back.
From that 13:15 point on, the Savage Storm got hot shooting the basketball. The lead had changed hands by the six-minute mark and from there both sides jockeyed for the lead in back-and-forth style.
With 26 seconds to play, an MJ Warrior, Jr. deep ball put SWOSU ahead 80-75, but Southeastern closed on a 5-0 run which included the game-tying dagger three pointer.
Southeastern went on to outscore SWOSU 17-9 in overtime. They scored the first pair of baskets after the intermission and did not look back.
Final shooting numbers for the game showed the Dawgs at 42% from the field which included 12-of-33 from beyond the arc. They were bested by Southeastern who shot 45% from the field and 14-of-38 from deep.
Both sides struggled at the free throw line. SWOSU 13-for-25, Southeastern 15-for-23.
Ben Smith led SWOSU with 20 points – making an efficient 50% of his attempts. He had his success with his size down low all game. Chris Braggs, Jr., two days removed from becoming SWOSU's fourth 1,000-point scorer, added 18 points. Kamden Gipson 16.
The loss drops SWOSU to 7-9 on the season and 3-7 in GAC play. It is the second loss of the season at the hands of Southeastern, who also defeated the Dawgs 112-87 back on December 3.
Next week will hold three additional home contests beginning with Northwestern on Monday before the typical Thursday and Saturday slate. Those opponents will be Arkansas Tech and Harding.
