Game Preview
  • SWOSU Football seeks its first win of the 2022 season when they host Southern Arkansas this Saturday in the Flex-Chem Football Classic
  • The Bulldogs have historically not had success against SAU dating back to the formation of the Great American Conference in 2011. Since then, SWOSU is 1-9 against the Muleriders and have not won against them since the 2014 season
  • You should be able to throw the previous mentioned record between teams out the door for this matchup though, as both team's feature first-year head coaches
  • The matchup Saturday should feature an up-tempo game as both offenses want to go fast. SAU had success last week doing so, after they put up 62 points and over 600 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, the Dawgs will look to jumpstart the offense and get the tempo going following a hangup last week against Henderson State

The Opponent
  • Southern Arkansas was picked to finish eighth in the GAC preseason poll, but is off to a fine start in 2022 following a 62-31 thumping of Northwestern last week in their home & season opener
  • Against NWOSU last week, SAU got everyone involved. Four different running backs and three receivers found the endzone
  • Eight different players had a gain of over 20 yards in the contest
  • Quarterback OB Jones threw the ball only 16 times (10-16) but for 216 yards and four scores. He was certainly the beneficiary of a strong running attack that featured 375 yards combined from seven different rushers
  • The Muleriders have averaged 39.5 points per game against SWOSU dating back to the 2017 season, including back-to-back 42-point performances in '21 & '19

SWOSU Offensive Notes
  • The Bulldog offense will look to build off last week's outing. An outing that did not feature an offensive touchdown
  • Just because SWOSU didn't score a touchdown, doesn't mean they didn't have opportunities. The Dawgs were in the red zone three times against Henderson State, but were forced into a pair of field goals and finished 2-3 in the redzone in scoring
  • Quarterback Tylan Morton finished 18-39 for 222 yards and ended up leading the team in rushing as well with 60 yards gained on the ground. Though he gained 60 yards, his net yardage ended at 8 due to sacks
  • SWOSU will need to establish the run against SAU. Against HSU, the Dawgs ran the ball 46 times for 66 total yards. Running backs Carlin Fils-Aime (14) & Dexter Brown (12) shared the load with a combined 26 carries. Brown averaged 3.9 yards per carry.
  • Deshon Moreaux caught a team high six passes in the season opener for 44 yards. Jalen Lampley led the team with 53 yards receiving and it came on a single big play on third down

SWOSU Defensive Notes
  • SWOSU won the turnover battle 2-0 last week and would love to continue that trend heading into their matchup with Southern Arkansas
  • Trey Fullwood forced a fumble on a hustle play that Logan Engle recovered in the opening quarter, while Zack Roberts intercepted a pass in the third quarter
  • Mason Daugherty led the team in tackles with seven (4s-3a) followed by Christian Toeleiu and Keldric Martin who both had six apiece
  • RJ Powell & Courtney Ledyard recorded one sack each

SWOSU Special Teams Notes
  • The Bulldog's lone touchdown on the night came early in the form of a Jalen Lampley punt return that went for 65 yards and a score. At the time, the score put SWOSU ahead 7-6 in what was their only lead of the game. It was Lampley's only punt return on the night
  • Last season, SWOSU was 2-7 in field goal attempts. Against Henderson State, Jaren Van Winkle tied that mark and finished a perfect 2-2 on the night from 25 and 35 yards
