Setting the Scene
  • SWOSU Football will look to win two games in a row for the first time since 2019, following the 24-20 victory last Saturday against Southern Arkansas that snapped a 1,043 day winless drought for the program
  • The Bulldogs have only won back-to-back games one time (2019) in the past four seasons, but should have serious momentum playing in front of home crowd again this weekend
  • Saturday's storyline should be intriguing, with SWOSU coming off a "weight off their shoulder" game with strong momentum on their side, compared to Southeastern who just fell on the road to a top-10 nationally ranked Harding team decisively 38-13 and they remain on the road again this week against the Dawgs
  • Southeastern holds a 6-3 advantage in the series between these two teams dating back 10 years. SWOSU's last win came in 2019 with a 35-17 victory
The Opponent
  • Southeastern, picked third in the GAC preseason poll, is coming off a 9-3 season that ended with a berth (and victory) in the Live United Bowl
  • After receiving votes in preseason national polls, SE has dropped out of consideration so far in the early going of the season
  • Behind veteran QB Daulton Hatley, Southeastern ranks second in the league through two games in passing -- averaging 296.5 yards through the air. They have also thrown the ball the second most times in the league. (82)
  • Receiver Marquis Gray has 13 catches on the year so far, two for touchdowns, and has been in the end zone in each of the last three games for SE dating back to their bowl game
  • SE is currently 9th in total defense in the GAC (383 yds / 36 ppg) and does not have an interception this season
SWOSU Offensive Notes
  • Following a season opener that did not feature an offensive touchdown, SWOSU got three last week against Southern Arkansas. All three scores came through the air from QB Tylan Morton to three different pass catchers: Deshon Moreaux, Jacob Karsak, and Isreal Watson
  • Watson had a breakout game against SAU, hauling in 10 grabs for 93 yards and his touchdown. This coming after a three-catch night against Henderson State a week prior
  • Against SAU, Morton finished 26-39 for 281 yards passing and added a team high 70 yards rushing. With 351 yards of combined offense, he was named the Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Week
  • Morton is currently also the leading rusher on the team in the early part of the season
  • Running back Dexter Brown is SWOSU's top run option to either side of Morton. He has carried the ball 19 times to start the year, but for 52 yards. With Carlin Fils-Aime injured for the foreseeable future, Brown should continue to see consistent work
  • In Fils-Aimes absence, Troy Henderson slides into the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. He rushed 11 times for 25 yards against SAU and caught two passes
  • SWOSU's 503 yards of passing offense through two games ranks them fourth in the GAC in the category
SWOSU Defensive Notes
  • After forcing a fumble against HSU, Treymon Fullwood continued his success with turnover production against SAU with an interception in the endzone that denied the Mulerider a scoring opportunity
  • Derrius Franklin also intercepted SAU's final pass of the game, marking the second straight game SWOSU has come away with two turnovers on defense
  • Keldric Martin and Christian Toeleiu has strong performances last week after racking up 14 tackles apiece as the only two Bulldogs to amass double digit tackles
  • Toeleiu had a sack and two tackle for losses as part of seven total TFLs the Bulldogs defense came up with against the Muleriders
  • SWOSU's five sacks (27 yards total) so far through two games ranks them fourth in the GAC in the category
  • Three interceptions so far through two games ties them for second in the GAC. UAM & SNU have four, SWOSU & ATU have three
  • On third downs, SWOSU is getting off the field 66% of the time. The Bulldogs have held opponents to a 33% third down conversation percentage, ranking them fourth in the league
SWOSU Special Teams Notes
  • Placekicker and punter Jaren Van Winkle is coming off a tremendous game against Southern Arkansas. The junior added another made field goal to his resume and punted two 70+ yarders that were both downed inside the two-yard line. For his efforts, he was named the GAC's Special Teams Player of the Week.
  • Van Winkle also broke the school's NCAA Division II era record (77 yds / 1998) for longest punt by two yards when he blasted a 79-yard punt in the fourth quarter
  • Van Winkle is a perfect 3-3 this season on field goals. SWOSU made two all last season.
  • Offensively, the Bulldogs will need to clean things up after a pair of muffed kicks resulted in turnovers last week. SWOSU also missed out on another field goal opportunity due to a bad snap.
