WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball fended off a late Arkansas Monticello comeback and eventually won game three in walk-off fashion after a seventh-inning single by
Breanna Simmons secured a 9-8 Senior Day victory and a weekend sweep of the Cotton Blossoms.
It is the first conference sweep of the season for the Dawgs, and sends seniors
Ashley McKellips,
Breanna Simmons,
Alisa Friesen,
Hannah Franklin, and
Jewell Lee out in style.
After UAM struck first with a single run in the top of the first, SWOSU answered with four runs of their own right after.
Dani Carmo and Franklin both doubled in a pair of runs to gain a 4-1 lead.
Two triples by Simmons and
Skye Tilley in the third inning had SWOSU back in business. The Dawgs plated four more runs on five total hits in the inning to extend the lead to 8-1.
The Cotton Blossoms did not go quietly though and chipped away at the lead in the fifth and got new life in the seventh when they tied the game with a grand slam.
SWOSU stayed focused though and got right back to work in the bottom of the seventh after a Franklin double started the winning inning off. The Dawgs went on to load the bases with no outs but found themselves with two outs after Monticello threw out a runner at home and forced a pop up.
Simmons stepped into the box with two outs, and the rest is history. The senior delivered the final blow, driving a ball into center to end it.
She finished 3-4 on the afternoon to lead the offense. Other seniors Franklin (3-3) and Lee (2-5) had productive days in the batter's box as well.
Alisa Friesen took the Dawgs home in the circle and threw one final complete game to earn the win and cap off her career.
SWOSU ends the season with four home GAC series victories to their credit and just shy of the No 8. Conference ranking needed to continue playing in the postseason.
