WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball scored five runs in the seventh inning but was too deep in a hole to recover – falling 17-7 to the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) on Tuesday in a midweek contest.
The visiting Drovers scored multiple runs in every inning but the second, while the SWOSU offense was held in check for much of the game.
USAO jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first, doubled the lead in the second, and doubled it again in the fourth.
Trailing 8-0, SWOSU got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of a
Jean Ortiz two-RBI double.
Nine more runs by the Drovers through the next three frames put the game out of reach and into run-rule territory.
The Dawgs plated five runs in the seventh inning and tried their best to escape the shortened game, but stranded two base runners and fell victim to the 10-run rule and dropped the contest 17-7.
Seven pitchers saw action on Tuesday, none throwing more than two innings.
Grant Ewy (L, 5-3) picked up the loss after exiting the game from his start after 2.0 innings of work.
Ortiz finished with three RBI and 1-2.
Enzo Bonventre hit his team leading 11th home run of the season in the seventh inning – a two-run shot to left field.
SWOSU returns to action on the road this weekend at Arkansas Tech. The Dawgs find themselves in the thick of postseason contention with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
