Softball Closes Out HSU Series With Win in Extras

ARKADELHPIA, Ark -  It took extra innings, but SWOSU softball defeated Henderson State 6-3 to pick up the series finale win over Henderson State and avoid the sweep.
 
SWOSU scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning and got three outs to salvage the weekend road trip.
 
SWOSU trailed 1-0 in the second inning as Henderson State scored a run in the bottom of the second inning.
 
However, SWOSU would tie the game in the top of the third inning when Jewell Lee scored on a passed ball. 
 
Henderson State would take the lead right back, as they scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 2-1. The Reddies also would score another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, making it 3-1. 
 
SWOSU cut Henderson State's two run lead in half when Lee recorded an RBI double into left field and Jordyn Wadley scored. SWOSU still trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. 
 
SWOSU tied the game when Wadley recorded an RBI double and Hannah Franklin scored. SWOSU held Henderson State scoreless in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game headed to extras.
 
After scoreless eighth, ninth and tenth innings on both sides, SWOSU built a three run lead in the top of the 11th inning when Skye Tilley hit a home run above the center field fence. Breanna Simmons recorded two RBIs when she hit a double into left field. Lee and Wadley each scored. 
 
SWOSU won the game when pitcher Alisa Friesen caught a line drive hit right back at her, snapping SWOSU's four game losing streak.
 
Friesen (W, 4-9) pitched all 11 innings and recorded three strikeouts and allowed 10 hits. Simmons recorded two RBIs and two hits. Franklin and Tilley each recorded two hits. 
 
SWOSU improves to 6-20 and 5-12 in Great American Conference play and will play their next game, 2 p.m. back at home against East Central for a GAC series. The game Friday is a double header, with the final game being played Saturday afternoon.
