Cold Shooting Plagues SWOSU in GAC Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Women's Basketball couldn't get the offense going on Thursday night it its conference opener against Oklahoma Baptist, falling to the Bison 72-52.

The Lady Bulldogs shot just 25% both as a team and from beyond the arc. The defense played solid all night by winning the turnover battle 21-7 and forcing multiple charges, but could not overcome the low scoring output on the offensive end.

SWOSU was outscored in all four quarters, which included a 16-7 second quarter that allowed OBU to lead 31-18 at halftime.

The pace quickened in the second half, but it was the Bison who again edged the home team in the third and fourth quarters. OBU saw its biggest lead of the night late in the final quarter and cruised to victory as the minutes dwindled in quarter number four.

SWOSU's perimeter defense was tough all night, holding OBU to 2-of-16 (12.5%) from deep. It was points in the paint and rebounding that hurt the Lady Dawgs. They were outrebounded handily, 55-32, and outscored 44-16 in the painted area.

Despite no points from three-point range, OBU still shot over 50% overall with efficient play around the basket.

Averi Zinn led the team in scoring with 20 points on a high-volume shooting night. Shamica Smith did much of the rebounding and finished with 12 rebounds – a new career best.

SWOSU drops to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in GAC play. They'll look for the first win of the season Saturday, on the road at Southeastern. Tipoff is scheduled for 1pm in Durant
