Women’s Basketball Weathers Savage Storm for First Conference Win

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Tied 64-64 with 1:17 left to play, Bethany Franks answered a game-tying Southeastern score with a go-ahead jump shot that gave SWOSU the last lead they needed. The #22/25 Lady Bulldogs went on to defeat the Savage Storm 72-66 for their sixth straight victory.

In a game that featured five lead changes and six ties – many of those coming in a tight fourth quarter – SWOSU finally took control of the contest with an 8-2 run to close things out. The only Southeastern score during that run came at the buzzer, with the result of the game already determined.

Franks had her jump shot working all night. The senior finished with 17 points, many of those coming from mid-range jumpers, and also had nine rebounds – one shy of a double-double.

SWOSU looked good to start the game, shooting 47% in the first quarter in route to a 20-15 lead through 10 minutes. Karly and Macy Gore combined for 12 of those 20, and the Dawgs were looking fluid.

The second quarter was not as efficient. SWOSU shot just 26% and was outscored in the quarter. Despite this, the Lady Bulldogs led 33-30 at halftime.

The game stayed tight throughout the second half and SWOSU found themselves trailing multiple times in the fourth quarter, including at 56-53 with 5:58 left in the game. SWOSU grinded through the quarter though and inevitably regained the lead and escaped with the conference opening night victory.

Karly Gore was leading scorer with 18 points. Franks followed right behind with her 17 and Macy Gore added 12. Both Gore sisters also had four steals. Makyra Tramble had a cold shooting night, but facilitated with a team high seven assists.

SWOSU shot 37% (26-of-69) as a team in the game overall and 25% (8-of-31) from beyond the arc. Coming into the game, SWOSU was 0-2 in games this season they did not connect on at least 10 deep balls.

The Lady Bulldogs (7-2, 1-0 GAC) will return to the floor on Saturday against Oklahoma Baptist. It will be game two of a four-game home stand. Tipoff scheduled for 1pm.
