SWOSU Soccer Wins In A Shootout

WEATHERFORD, Okla - SWOSU Soccer got back on the winning track Tuesday afternoon at home, as they defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State 3-2.

"We were fortunate not to trail in this game," coach Mark Persson said. "After we scored, we gave up a soft goal both times. We were fortunate to score three goals and we shouldn't need to score three goals to win the game. We are happy to get another conference win and are happy to gain three more points."

The last time these teams played, it ended in a 0-0 draw. However, the start for this game was more exciting as less than 30 seconds into the game, Claire Torry scored a goal for SWOSU, making it 1-0.Five minutes later, Northwestern tied the game at one when they scored a goal.

Torry scored again and this time, it was a long screamer outside the box, making the score 2-1 with 31 minutes left in the first half.

"Claire is one of our most consistent players," Persson said. "She is very talented and quick. She is playing better than ever and being able to get two goals is a great asset to have. It was very important for her to score when she did."

Three minutes later, Northwestern answered and we were tied at two. Brianna Benitez gave SWOSU a 3-2 lead when she scored a goal off the back post. The rest of the first half was rather quiet and SWOSU was ahead 3-2 at halftime.

SWOSU took nine shots with seven on goal and Northwestern had five shots with three on goal. SWOSU had a corner kick, but Northwestern had two corner kicks.

Midway through the second half, Anna Bager hit her head on the ground, diving for a ball in the Northwestern box, but Persson said she will be alright moving forward.

Each team attacked super hard, but neither team could score a goal and SWOSU won the game 3-2.

"We limited their good opportunities in the second half," Persson said. "We played much better and are happy with another conference win."

SWOSU had 13 total shots and eight of them were on goal and Northwestern took six shots, with three on goal. SWOSU also had four corner kicks, but two yellow cards. Goalkeeper Ashley Hughes had a save.

With this win, SWOSU improves to 7-5-1 and is 4-1-1 in Great American Conference play. SWOSU will play their next game, 3 p.m. Thursday at East Central. These two teams have met once this season and SWOSU won 2-1, but they needed two goals in the last 10 minutes of play to secure the win.

"Going on the road always can be a difficult situation," Persson said. "We really need another win and need three more points in conference play. Every game matters, but our focus is one game at a time. In practice Wednesday, we will practice hard and prepare for East Central. We have to come out with energy, passion and we have to be consistent on defense, in order to get the result we want, which is a win."
