Softball Stumbles in Opener at ECU

ADA, Okla. – SWOSU Softball suffered a pair of conference setbacks on Friday, dropping a pair to East Central by scores of 9-6 and 10-2 (6 inn.) to fall to 20-22 in Great American Conference play.

The Bulldogs (21-30, 20-22 GAC) now enter the final day of the regular season in seventh place in the GAC standings with a shot to clinch their first trip to the GAC Tournament since 2013. The final doubleheader at ECU begins at noon on Saturday.

ECU 9, SWOSU 6

With five runs in the bottom of the second and three in the fourth, ECU was able to hold off the Bulldogs in the opener. SWOSU scored single runs in four of the first six innings and got a two-run double from Amanda Moreno in the top of the seventh inning before the game ended with two runners on base.

Moreno was 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the way for SWOSU while Hannah Morris and Hannah Franklin had two hits apiece. Sidney Kirk hit a solo home run for the Dawgs in addition to pitching the final 2.2 innings in relief of Alisa Friesen and Miranda Grover. Friesen (12-12) suffered the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings.

ECU 10, SWOSU 2 (6 inn.)

The first career home run by Hannah Owen, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, was one of three hits for the Bulldogs and accounted for both of their runs in the night cap. ECU answered with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and scored seven runs over the final three innings to end the game one inning early via run-rule.

Friesen (12-13) again started in the circle and allowed 10 runs on 14 hits with two strikeouts.
