ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After
Nick Shoemaker hit a three-pointer with 2:03 to play, SWOSU was held scoreless and Ouachita escaped Bill Vining Arena with a 75-67 victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday night.
The Bulldogs trailed by as many as 14 points early in the second half, but they used an 11-0 run to get back within striking distance at the under-12 media timeout. Ouachita slowly built their lead back to double figures and led 64-53 with 5:56 to play, but the Dawgs still had fight in them and made one final push.
Tre Evans picked up the pace and shot several free throws in the final minutes, but it was three-pointers from
Daniel Eibel and Shoemaker that cut the deficit to four, 71-67 with 2:03 to play. SWOSU's defense got stops on the next two possessions, but they were unable to convert at the offensive end as Evans missed on a drive attempt and
Kamden Gipson stepped out of bounds to conclude a long possession. From that point, Ouachita was able to put the game away at the free throw line, making all four of their attempts in the final 20 seconds.
SWOSU shot 37.7% from the field and 30.8% from three-point range while being outrebounded 42-to-36, but the teams were both even with 14 second-chance points.
Evans paced the Bulldogs with 17 points, doing most of his damage at the free throw line as he hit 9-of-12 attempts from the charity stripe.
Chris Braggs, Jr., had 15 points and five rebounds while Shoemaker and Eibel each hit three three-pointers and scored 11 points apiece.
The Bulldogs (3-10, 0-7 GAC) stay in Arkadelphia for one more game, a trip across the street to face Henderson State on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
