Middles Magnificent as Bulldogs Take Down Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – The starting middle hitter duo of Sofia Gruden and Elizabeth McVicker combined for 30 kills and seven blocks as they helped the SWOSU Volleyball outlast Cameron for a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night at Aggie Gym in Lawton.

SWOSU took a 2-0 lead and were on the verge of ending the match in the third before a late rally by Cameron took the set 25-23 and forced it into the fourth. Early in the fourth set, the lights went out at Aggie Gym, forcing a stoppage of just less than an hour before play resumed.

In the fourth set, SWOSU fell behind early but used strong defense to push ahead 17-13 in the middle of the set. Cameron had a 23-21 advantage in the fourth, when Allison Russell took her lone swing of the game and made it count, getting a kill to get SWOSU back within one. An attack error by the Aggies and a kill by Danusia Sipa Borgeaud forced Cameron to call for timeout with the Bulldogs serving for the match. When play resumed, Klemson Lancaster served the Bulldogs third ace of the match, closing out the set at 25-23 and the match at 3-1.

McVicker led the Bulldogs with a very efficient evening, putting down 18 kills and hitting .500 for the match while also recording four digs, three blocks and one service ace. Gruden added 12 kills and four blocks while hitting .409 and Borgeaud added a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Allie Hoang also had a double-double with 49 assists and 13 digs – which tied with Lancaster and Kaitlyn Dillon for the team lead.

SWOSU (4-1) now has one week off to prepare for their Great American Conference opener, which will be next Tuesday evening against East Central. That match is set for 7:00 pm at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center in Weatherford.
