SWOSU Baseball Season Comes to a Close against Arkansas Tech

Box Score (html)

ENID, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball couldn't capitalize on opportunities in Monday's Great American Conference Tournament elimination game and fell to Arkansas Tech 9-5 to effectively end the Bulldog season. The Bulldogs were in the game for almost the entire duration until Tech scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings which extended their lead to a game-high five runs in the process – a deficit SWOSU could not overcome.

The Dawgs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning and had a final lead heading into the bottom of the fourth at 3-2. Every time SWOSU would take the lead, Arkansas Tech inevitably answered shortly after to either regain the lead or knot things back up.

Tech scored two runs in the second and fourth innings to grab a 4-3 lead near the midway point, and SWOSU knotted things up at 4-4 in the top of the fifth with a single run.

Despite the score in the fifth inning to tie the game back up, SWOSU stranded the bases loaded and missed out on a potential opportunity to get more runs. With one out and runners on second and third, Alex Pimentel was hit by pitch to the load the bases. Tech changed pitchers, and struck out the final two hitters of the inning to limit the damage to one run and keep the game tied.

An inning later, opportunities continued to present themselves for SWOSU after Chase Duncan and Daniel Richardson both reached safely to start the inning. After a sacrifice bunt moved them both over, the Dawgs failed to cash in and left them both on base to end the frame.

Following the ATU pitching change, the Dawgs failed to score for three consecutive innings in the sixth through the eighth. Meanwhile, the Wonder Boys finally took the lead for good with three runs in the seventh and added two runs of insurance in the eighth.

Two hits early in the seventh inning finally got SWOSU starting pitcher Tyler Tuck out of the ball game, including an RBI single that initially gave Tech the lead. Following the lead change, Jose Laboy entered from out of the bullpen in relief and the Wonder Boys tacked on another pair of hits including a two-RBI single to left field that concluded the innings scoring.

Laboy was back on the in the eighth, where Tech added insurance runs with a two run home run that extended the Bulldog deficit to 9-4.

SWOSU attempted a ninth-inning rally by plating a run and sending six to bat in the frame, but inevitably bowed out to Tech to be eliminated from the conference tournament.

Tuck (L, 2-6) suffered the loss in his 6.1 inning start. He struck out two and walked three, while surrendering six hits and six runs. Laboy threw 0.2 innings out of the bullpen before Jesse Lee finished the game off with an inning of scoreless relief.

Alex Pimentel, Chase Duncan, Marion McLean and Nick Ward all posted two hits apiece in the game. Brady Burtner and Pimentel also both homered in the game.

The Bulldog season comes to a close with an even 24-24 record. SWOSU will look to replace nine seniors off of the 2018 team, but will return five starters from Monday's starting lineup.
