Saturday Split Sees SWOSU Drop GAC Series to SAU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball split a Great American Conference doubleheader on Saturday at the Athletic Complex, defeating Southern Arkansas 3-2 in the first game before the Muleriders took the second game 4-0. With the split, SAU wins the series 2-1 after claiming the opening game on Friday afternoon.

SWOSU (15-11, 10-5 GAC) returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Oklahoma Christian for a non-conference matchup beginning at 3:00 pm.

SWOSU 3, Southern Arkansas 2 (10 inn.)
Box Score

A walkoff single from Chase Duncan back up the middle and into center field scored Marion McLean for the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. SWOSU played from behind in the early going, with SAU scoring the game's opening run with three straight hits to open the game, before taking a 2-1 lead with RBI singles from Robert Perea and McLean in the second frame.

The pitcher's and defense took control over the next few innings, limiting the offense until SAU managed to tie the score at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth. As he did the entire day, Brendan Peitsmeyer was able to limit the damage by recording a strikeout to end the threat with the bases loaded. SAU had runners on throughout the day, forcing Peitsmeyer to throw with difficult circumstances but the senior responded and forced the Muleriders to strand 15 runners on base in the game.

With one out in the bottom of the 10th, McLean singled into right field and moved into scoring position on a groundout from Bryan Miranda. That's when Duncan came through with his clutch hit and McLean beat the throw from the Muleriders outfield to home plate to end the contest.

SWOSU had multi-hit games from Brady Burtner, Perea and McLean, with eight different players helping contribute to the 11 hits for the Bulldogs in the game.

Peitsmeyer (2-0) pitched all 10 innings for the Bulldogs, allowing just two runs on 13 hits while striking out 11 batters from Southern Arkansas to earn the victory.

Southern Arkansas 4, SWOSU 0

After the pitching dominated the first two innings, the Muleriders got to Bulldog starter Tyler Tuck and scored three runs on four hits in the third before adding an RBI single in the fourth.

SWOSU managed just two hits, getting singles from Perea in the second and Alex Pimentel in the sixth, but still had chances but stranded seven runners on base.
