Baseball Sweeps Sunday Slate over Bisons

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball wasted no time earning their second GAC series victory of the season on Sunday after collecting a pair of wins against the Bisons in the opening day of the three-game series. The Bulldogs won their games in different ways, overpowering HU in game one before utilizing timely hitting and defense in game two.

The Bulldogs (7-5, 4-1 GAC) will go for the series sweep of Harding on Monday in the final game of the series set to begin at 12 pm at the Athletic Complex.

Game One
SWOSU 11, Harding 0
Box Score (html)

Daniel Richardson set the tone early for SWOSU in the second inning when he drove a ball down the left field line and over the fence for his first home run of the season. That would be one of four home runs in the contest off of the Bulldog bats, and one of Richardson's two he had in the game.

The shortened game due to run-rule broke open in the fifth inning when SWOSU tallied three home runs in the frame courtesy of Richardson (his second of the day), Alex Pimentel, and Brooks Benson. The Bulldogs put up six runs in the inning and led 7-0 after five complete. An inning later, SWOSU added another four runs on RBI hits from Chase Duncan and Pimentel which extended the lead to 11-0.

Defensively, the Dawgs held Harding scoreless with solid plays in the field and solid pitching on the mound. Drew Grubb (W, 1-2) went the distance, striking out six batters while scattering five hits to earn his first victory on the bump this season.

Three hitters had a multi-hit game led by Richardson who went a perfect 3-for-3 which included his pair of solo bombs and Pimentel's team-leading three RBIs.

Game Two
SWOSU 5, Harding 3
Box Score (html)

The offense didn't overpower Harding in the nightcap, but instead pieced together good at-bats and timely hitting to conjure up their five runs.

Bryan Miranda led things off in the first inning with a triple and was driven in a batter later, giving SWOSU an early 1-0 lead. The score then held firm until the fifth inning when the Bulldogs got three more runs with RBI singles from Chase Duncan and Alex Pimentel to extend to margin to 4-0.

With Jake Cowan holding Harding scoreless on the mound up until the sixth, SWOSU's 4-0 lead seemed safe. But the Bisons made things interesting in that sixth inning when they tacked on three runs by taking advantage of a SWOSU error in the field and walks.
Leading 4-3 into the bottom half of the sixth, the Dawgs got an insurance run off of a wild pitch to give them breathing room at 5-3 heading into the final frame.

Brendan Peitsmeyer came on for the save and collected his second of the season after holding HU scoreless in his three outs of work. He was helped by Marion McLean, who in right field made a diving grab to deny Harding of a leadoff extra base hit.

Cowan (W, 3-1) finished with 6.0 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts. He allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in the game while walking two. Miranda and Brady Burtner both had a pair of hits in the contest including a triple from each of them.
