SAN ANGELO, Texas – SWOSU Baseball fell in the final game of the series to No. 20 Angelo State 10-1, concluding the series and their time in Texas. The Bulldogs leave Foster Field in San Angelo with a win over a nationally ranked Rams squad, but lost the overall series 2-1 after dropping the final two games of the series.
The second inning proved to be troublesome for SWOSU after they surrendered six runs (five unearned) in the frame on only three hits. A pair of costly errors and a few free bases on walks and wild pitches mixed with the three hits during the inning allowed ASU to open the game up early with a large lead.
Three more runs were tacked on by the Rams in the fourth and fifth innings and after five complete, Angelo State led the Dawgs 9-1. After another run crossed in the seventh inning, the Dawgs trailed by nine.
The offense had a chance to cut into the deficit in their half of the seventh trailing 9-1 when they loaded the bases with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat and kept the deficit out of reach.
SWOSU had six hits on the afternoon, led by
Chase Duncan who went 2-for-4 and
Alex Pimentel who went 1-for-4 and who drove in the lone run in the game with a sac fly.
Gabe Jacobo (L, 0-1) suffered his first loss of the season after pitching 5.0 innings and surrendering nine runs on nine hits, although only four of those were registered as earned runs.
Jose Laboy pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run and
Justin Moreno closed out the eighth inning with a perfect three-up and three-down outing.
SWOSU (3-4) will now turn their focus to league play when they travel to Arkansas Tech this weekend (Friday/Saturday, Feb. 16-17) for the first series against a conference opponent.
