Lady Dawgs Dominant Defensively in Runaway Victory over Cotton Blossoms

Box Score (html)

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The No. 10/7 Lady Bulldogs allowed a season low 46 points on Saturday afternoon including just 19 second half points in a 96-46 rout of Arkansas-Monticello that extended the SWOSU winning streak to 14 games.

The Lady Dawgs suffocated UAM all game on the defensive end of the floor, forcing 20 turnovers by the Cotton Blossoms while holding them to a mere 27% shooting from the floor – the lowest shooting percentage an opponent has shot all season.

Monticello trailed by four points after the first quarter at 17-13, but managed to score just 33 points combined the final three quarters. The 46 points allowed to the Cotton Blossoms shattered the Dawgs' previous lowest opponent scoring total which came against Southern Arkansas back on January 6th when they allowed 60 points to the Lady Muleriders.

While the defense held firm, the Lady Bulldog offense rolled. After a slow start in the opening quarter where both teams shot just 30%, SWOSU woke up and finished the game at 45.5% as a team including a 57% (8-for-14) second quarter.

The third quarter was when the Lady Dawgs dealt the final blow to UAM when they rattled off a 28-2 scoring run that spanned almost the entire quarter. SWOSU totaled 30 points in the frame and held Monticello to just six points in the entire 10-minute session.

The three ball was working all afternoon as SWOSU connected on 16-of-41 (39%) from beyond the arc, including 10 combined from Hailey Tucker, Hayden Priddy, and Tyra Aska combined.

Aska led the Lady Bulldogs with 22 points while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out five assists. Tucker was right there with her, finishing with 20 points and eight rebounds herself. Priddy added 13 points with a team high eight assists while Bethany Franks notched another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Bulldogs got playing time out of the entire bench, with all 15 players getting floor time by the game's end. Taber Beer led the way from off the bench with eight points, followed by Maddie Sperle with seven. Kailee Childers scored her first points in a Bulldog uniform when she connected on a three from the top of the arc in the fourth quarter.

SWOSU (22-1, 17-0 GAC) returns home to the friendly confines of the Pioneer Cellular Event Center on Thursday (Feb. 15) to host Southeastern where the Dawgs will look to push their winning streak to 15 games.
