Lady Bulldogs Fend off Oklahoma Christian for Seventh Straight Win

Box Score (html)

EDMOND, Okla. – For the second straight game, Lady Bulldog Basketball had to overcome a late, fourth-quarter deficit to earn a victory, outscoring Oklahoma Christian 10-4 over the final three minutes to cap off an 81-76 victory on Thursday evening at the Eagles Nest.

SWOSU opened up their largest lead of the game late in the first quarter, taking a 26-10 lead after 10 minutes of play. Momentum shifted significantly in the second frame, however, with OC knocking down four three-pointers and shooting 55% from the field to cut the deficit to three at halftime with SWOSU leading 42-39.

Oklahoma Christian was able to limit the Lady Bulldogs top two scoring threats – Hailey Tucker & Hayden Priddy – in the third quarter, holding SWOSU to 14 points in the frame while both Tucker and Priddy were held scoreless. Dovile Strimaitye did her best to keep the Lady Dawgs close, scoring all nine of her points on 4-for-4 shooting in the third and converting a three-point play with less than 10 seconds to play to make it a 57-56 lead for OC after three.

Tyra Aska knocked down two straight three's to open the fourth quarter and put SWOSU back in control. The Lady Bulldogs would lead for most of the fourth quarter, except when OC's prolific-scoring guard Addy Clift converted the old-fashioned three-point play at the fourth quarter media timeout that allowed the Lady Eagles to claim a 68-66 lead.

Clift scored the next four points for OC, who held a 72-71 lead with 2:41 to play. Aska put SWOSU back on top with a drive to the basket and a defensive stop was cleared by Priddy, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to be patient on their next possession, which ended with Tucker being fouled and converting on a pair of free throws to make it 75-72 with 1:14 to play.

After OC missed two free throws, Taylor Hedrick was fouled and knocked down a pair for the Lady Dawgs, who hit 13-of-16 attempts from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter and their final nine for the game. Priddy polished off the victory with four made free throws in the final 15 seconds.

Five different players scored in double figures for the Lady Bulldogs, who were led by Priddy with 17 points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists. Tucker chipped in 14 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and a steal and Tyra Aska finished with 13 points, three rebounds and three steals.

Bethany Franks finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds along with three steals. Maddie Sperle provided a spark off the bench in both halves, recording career-highs in both points (10) and rebounds (5). Strimaitye was one point off her season high with nine points and three rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench.

SWOSU improves to 7-1 on the year with the victory, their seventh consecutive since dropping the season opener. Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is a Great American Conference contest against Southern Nazarene, which is set for 3:00 pm on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 8) at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
