SWOSU Comes up Short at Southeastern

DURANT, Okla. – Charles Beauregard, Jr., poured in 24 points, hitting 5-of-10 three-point attempts, but SWOSU was limited to 11 points in the final seven minutes as Southeastern Oklahoma State pulled away for an 83-72 victory on Saturday afternoon at Bloomer Sullivan Arena in Durant.
 
After falling behind by 10 points less than seven minutes in, the Bulldogs got heated up from downtown and used a 9-0 lead to take a 25-24 lead on a three-pointer from Beauregard with 7:48 to play in the opening half. SWOSU was limited to just seven points over the final seven-plus minutes of the half, however, which allowed Southeastern to rebuilt a 10-point lead late in the half and take a 40-32 advantage to the break.
 
The second half followed a similar script, with Southeastern going on top by 10 at 47-37  with 17:10 to play before the Dawgs mounted a rally that got the game tied at 49-all after a Nick Shoemaker three-pointer capped off a 12-2 run by SWOSU. With the Bulldogs unable to regain the lead, Southeastern countered with a run of 16-5, building an 11-point lead of 65-54 with 8:48 to play. SWOSU got back within six on a pair of occasions down the stretch before Southeastern pushed the lead as high as 13 in the final seconds.
 
SWOSU actually made more field goals (29-to-27) and three-point field goals (11-to-7) than Southeastern, but the Savage Storm were the recipients of 25 free throw attempts and cashed in on 22 of them while the Bulldogs managed just six free throw attempts in the entire game. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 43.9% (29-of-66) from the field and 34.4% (11-of-32) from the distance.
 
Southeastern had a big advantage on the backboard, outrebounding SWOSU 40-to-24 for 12 second-chance points while the Bulldogs bench outscored that of the Savage Storm 22-to-16. Both teams shared the ball well, with Southeastern totaling 22 assists on 27 made field goals while SWOSU tied a season-high with 21 assists on 29 made baskets.
 
Beauregard led the Bulldogs with 24 points and five rebounds while Justin King was a spark off the bench with 15 points, four rebounds and two assists. Nick Shoemaker extended his streak of games with a made three-pointer to 29, knocking down four shots from long range to finish with 14 points and four steals in 34 minutes of action.
 
The Bulldogs (3-11, 1-7 GAC) now return home for two games early next week, starting on Monday evening when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State in rivalry action. That game will tip off at approximately 7:30 pm from the Pioneer Cellular Event Center in Weatherford.
