Bulldogs Fall Victim to Hat Trick, Harding

Box Score (html)

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Soccer's winless streak continued against Harding on Thursday after falling to the Lady Bisons 3-2. Bethany Sutherland netted all three goals for HU including two in the second half, forcing the Bulldogs to play from behind a majority of the final 45 minutes.

Olivia Butler gave SWOSU its only lead of the game in the 24th minute, thanks to a pass from Sarah Wilson. Butler dribbled from right to left in the box and was able to find space and fire a high ball that ricocheted off the cross bar and past the line for a goal.

10 minutes later, Harding and Sutherland answered with a strike of her own after a battle for the ball just outside the goalie box. Heading into the locker room, the teams were knotted at 1-1.

Two more Sutherland goals in the 54th and 73rd minutes gave the Lady Bisons the lead. Trailing 3-1 with 13 minutes remaining, Lauren Williams took a free kick and drove a line-drive kick straight past the HU goalkeeper to breathe life back into SWOSU. The Dawgs would continue to threaten the rest of the way, but were unable to get the equalizer.

With 14 seconds remaining, the attack had one last chance after a kicked ball from Lexie Bates setup Sandra Nabweteme for a long run from midfield. With open grass and a Harding goalie in sight, she took off to score but was caught by defenders just outside the box forcing a plant and redirect. The defensive recovery proved just enough, as Nabweteme fired a last-second shot but it missed right and the clock struck zeros.

Both Butler and Williams netted their first goals of the season in the match, now making 12 different Bulldogs who have scored goals this season.

SWOSU is now 0-6-3 in the previous nine meetings with Harding, dating back to 2013.

The Bulldogs (4-3-1, 1-1-1 GAC) will have a quick turnaround, hosting Ouachita Baptist at the Athletic Complex on Saturday at 11 am for another conference match.
