RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – SWOSU Softball wrapped up the 2017 season on Saturday with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Arkansas Tech. The fourth and final game of the series was cancelled due to impending weather, leaving the Bulldogs with a final record of 18-33, which included a 12-29 mark in Great American Conference contests.
The teams were locked in another low-scoring contest with no score through four innings as
Taya Haney slowed the Golden Suns while the Bulldogs again struggled to get anything going against ATU's star pitcher Jalissa Gum.
In the bottom of the fifth, ATU cashed in on a pair of SWOSU errors and had three hits as part of a four-run inning that included two, two-run singles. At the conclusion of the inning, the game entered into a weather delay, which was resumed after about an hour as both teams managed to complete the game.
In the top of the sixth, SWOSU got their first run of the series, an unearned run scored by
Miranda McDonald on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Samantha Householder. SWOSU has two of their four hits in the inning, but they would be unable to get any closer.
Haney (5-13) tossed a complete game, allowing seven hits and three earned runs over 6.0 innings but suffered the setback in her final collegiate contest.
Samantha Householder was 2-for-2 at the plate with one RBI while
Paige Bowler and
Tori Hawk also had hits in the game.
SWOSU Softball finishes the season with 18 wins, a one-win improvement from 2016 and it marks the third straight year that the Bulldogs have improved their win total.
