Softball Slowed by Henderson State in Series Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – On a windy afternoon in Western Oklahoma, Henderson State defeated SWOSU Softball in a pair of games, limiting the Bulldogs to just three runs in each game of the doubleheader.

SWOSU (14-26, 8-22 GAC) will conclude the series against Henderson State on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am at the Athletic Complex. In between games, the Dawgs will honor 10 seniors as part of Senior Weekend.

Henderson State 6, SWOSU 3
Box Score

SWOSU took advantage of a leadoff double from Tori Hawk in the fourth and scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead in the inning. Hawk would score on an RBI single from Sidney Kirk before the Bulldogs cashed in a two-out error by the Reddies pitcher as Abigail Schade and Kaitlyn Tottress scored to give SWOSU the lead.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Henderson State responded with two home runs in the top of the fifth that gave the advantage back to the Reddies at 5-3. HSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and hung on for the victory.

The Bulldogs were held to six hits in the game, getting two from Kirk and one each from Hawk, Taya Haney, Miranda West and Bailey King. Taylor Eaves (4-7) started and took the loss in the circle after allowing eight hits and five runs in 5.2 innings of work.

Henderson State 7, SWOSU 3
Box Score

The Bulldogs trailed 2-0 after three innings, but got two unearned runs – including an RBI single from Samantha Householder – to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Unfortunately, the Reddies responded in a fashion similar to the first game and scored two runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.

HSU then got two runners on in the top of the seventh for Ashleigh Erb, who homered to straight away center field and put the game out of reach. SWOSU did get an RBI groundout from Taya Haney in the bottom of the 7th, but it was not enough to come back in the nightcap.

Abigail Schade had two of SWOSU's five hits in the game and one of two RBI while Haney, Samantha Householder and Miranda McDonald also recorded base hits. Haney (3-10) tossed a complete game, allowing seven runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and four walks but took the loss.
