Dawgs Downed in High Scoring Series Opener

Box Score (html)

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball fell to the Boll Weevils of Arkansas-Monticello 16-10 on Friday afternoon to drop game one of the Great American Conference series. With the wind howling to left-center field, the bats for both teams came alive to combine for 26 runs and 28 hits in the contest.

The Dawgs jumped out to an early 5-1 lead through the first third of the game thanks to a three-run second and a two-run third inning. Conner Anderson and Richard Marches hit back-to-back jacks to provide all three runs in the second, while an RBI double and advancement to third base on the throw to the plate from Daniel Richardson and a balk brought him in to score the other two.

The lead would not hold though, as the Weevils proceeded to hang eight runs on six hits and four walks in their half of the fourth to answer. UAM's put up three more runs in the fifth to tally 11 unanswered runs and take a 12-5 lead at the midway point.

Monticello was able to get two in the top half of the seventh, extending their lead even further. SWOSU gave one last run at the comeback in the bottom of the seventh by doubling four times and adding two more singles in the mix to score five runs in the inning and get within four at 14-10, but UAM again answered with two runs to slow any momentum the Bulldogs had produced and put the game away.

Every SWOSU arm allowed at least one run in the contest, and starter Brendan Peitsmeyer (3-4) was charged with the loss.

Offensively, five Dawgs collected at least two hits led by Daniel Richardson's three-hit performance and Anderson's four RBIs. In the field, each team committed one error a piece, but only one run out of the 26 that crossed home was unearned.

The Bulldogs (9-16, 5-9 GAC) will be back in action tomorrow against the Boll Weevils in the doubleheader portion of the schedule beginning at noon, with the final game to follow roughly 30 minutes after.
