OKLAHOMA CITY – Jacob Spring had five RBI, including the go-ahead two-run single in the 11th inning as SWOSU Baseball defeated Oklahoma City University on Tuesday evening at Jim Wade Stadium. The win is the second straight extra-inning midweek victory for the Dawgs, who improve to 21-11 on the year.
SWOSU got on the board first with an RBI groundout from
Jacob Spring in the first inning to score
Joshua Santos while an unearned run in the fifth inning made it 2-0 in favor of the Dawgs. The next four runs belonged to Oklahoma City, who scored one in the fifth and got a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Bulldogs quickly responded to that with four runs in the top of the seventh frame to regain the lead. Santos hit a two-run double and Spring cleared the bases with a two-run homer that gave SWOSU a 6-4 advantage. That lead would stand until the bottom of the eighth as the Stars loaded the bases and tied the game on a bases-loaded walk from SWOSU reliever
Jeremy Smith.
Dillon Freie came on in relief of Smith and got out of the jam with a strikeout, pickoff and fly out that sent things to the ninth inning knotted up at 6-6. SWOSU had a chance to take the lead with Polston reaching by error, Spring getting hit by a pitch and pinch hitter
Zach Barton being walked to load the bases with two outs, but Polston got caught in a rundown to end the threat.
With two outs in the tenth and nothing going for the Dawgs,
Cole Wagner stepped in and came through in the clutch with his first career home run, a solo shot that put SWOSU up 7-6. OCU had an answer, however, with a two-out single in the bottom of the inning that forced the game to the 11th.
In the 11th, SWOSU got their first two runners on base with Santos and Polston standing at second and third as Spring came to the dish and delivered the game-winning two-run single into right center and scoring both runners. The Bulldogs would load the bases in the inning, but leave them stranded as part of 10 runners left on base in the game.
Spring finished 2-for-5 with five RBI and one run scored while
Tanner Dearman was the only other player with two hits in the game. Santos had two RBI and scored three times while Wagner also crossed the dish twice.
Quinton Dougherty (1-1) was the sixth SWOSU pitcher to see action on Tuesday and he tossed 2.0 innings and worked around one hit by OCU in the bottom of the 11th to earn the victory.
