WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball scored the final four runs on Tuesday as the Bulldogs earned their third straight midweek victory, defeating Cameron 4-2 in front of a large 'Pack the Park' contingent at the Athletic Complex.
Cameron scored the first two runs of the game, pushing one across on an RBI groundout in the second and following that with a sacrifice fly in the third inning to go up 2-0. SWOSU got on the board in the bottom of the third as
Cole Wagner singled to lead off the inning and came home to score on an RBI single by
Korbin Polston.
Polston's next at-bat would tie up the game as another RBI single brought in
Tanner Dearman from second base, evening the score at 2-2 after five innings of play.
Blake Gooden entered the game in relief of
Ben Schweinfurth in the sixth and the Dawgs took the lead in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs.
Joel Baxley singled and
Greg Bruno walked to get two runners on in the sixth for Wagner, who came through with an RBI single up the middle to score Baxley. Dearman followed that with another hit right back up the middle, bringing in Bruno to extend the advantage to 4-2 after six.
SWOSU relievers
Jeremy Smith and
Quinton Dougherty helped Gooden to close out the Aggies, allowing three hits in the final three frames and forcing Cameron to leave two runners on base. Dougherty worked a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season and third in the past week.
Dearman and Polston led the way for SWOSU offensively with three hits apiece and a combined three RBI for the duo. Baxley and Wagner each had multiple hits as well, helping the Bulldogs to a 12-to-7 advantage in hits.
Gooden (1-0) earned the win after holding the Aggies scoreless in 2.1 innings and allowing three hits with one strikeout.
"Our guys really stepped up today and played pretty well all around," SWOSU Head Coach
Zack Saunders said following the win. "You have to feel good about the way our bullpen threw today, holding Cameron to two runs when they've really been swinging it well, and our guys kept grinding and found ways to get runs on the board."
SWOSU improves to 24-12 with the victory and they're now 10-5 in non-conference games this season. The Bulldogs now head on the road for the final time this season with a three-game series at Arkansas Tech beginning on Friday evening in Russellville.
