Miscues Costly as Bulldogs Upended by Central Oklahoma

Box Score (html)

EDMOND, Okla. – Joel Baxley went 3-for-5 with two RBI while Korbin Polston also had a multi-hit game, but six errors and three unearned runs proved costly as the Bulldog baseball team fell to Central Oklahoma by a score of 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon in Edmond.

SWOSU scored first, with Tanner Dearman scoring an unearned run on an RBI single from Zach Barton in the third inning, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the inning, however, UCO got two runs on three hits while also taking advantage of two SWOSU errors to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bulldogs biggest inning was aided by three more UCO errors as SWOSU got four runs home in the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead. CJ Faddis scored thanks to a throwing error while Jacob Spring and Baxley had RBI hits in the inning and Barton got a run home with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher.

That lead held up until the sixth inning, when a lead-off error setup a six-run inning as Central Oklahoma regained control of the lead by a score of 8-5. UCO added one run in the eighth inning to extend their lead to 9-5 heading into the Bulldogs final at-bat.

Joshua Santos and Polston led off the ninth with back-to-back singles and both came around to score. Santos played on a wild pitch while an RBI single from Baxley brought Polston across to make it 9-7 with two outs in the final inning before a groundout ended the contest.

SWOSU had 10 hits in the contests, compared to nine for the Bronchos, who made five errors in the contest while the Dawgs had six miscues. Vincent Berrones (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing two hits and four runs with two walks in the sixth inning.

The home crowd has a chance to see SWOSU (1-3) in action for the first time this season on Friday afternoon as the Bulldogs open a three-game series against Newman.
