Strong Offensive Outing Leads to Midweek Baseball Victory

Box Score (html)

OKLAHOMA CITY – SWOSU Baseball scored four runs in the top of the first and fifth innings, with two runs each in the third and seventh, as they took down Mid-America Christian 12-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the first inning and brought four runs home as Joel Baxley had an RBI single and Trent Troxell came through with a two-run single in the innings. MACU got their first run on the board in the second, making it 4-1, but the Bulldogs would add to their lead with a two-run double from Haden Houska in the top of the third inning.

The top of the fifth inning saw SWOSU score two runs with Joshua Santos drawing a bases-loaded walk before the next batter, Tanner Dearman was hit by a pitch to bring a run home. Korbin Polston then stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run single into left, scoring Santos and Houska to make it 10-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

SWOSU again loaded the bases in the seventh for pinch hitter Bryan Holt, who delivered with a two-run single into center that scored Zach Barton and Dearman, making it 12-1. MACU got four runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be the final scoring of the contest as Brett McNaughton entered and recorded the final seven outs – five strikeouts – to end the game.

Austin Hilton (1-0) got the win after tossing 5.1 innings of work and allowing just three hits and one run. Ben Schweifurth and Vincent Berrones saw time in relief before McNaughton closed the door in the final two-plus innings.

Seven different players recorded a hit for the Bulldogs, who had nine as a team, led by a 2-for-3 effort from Baxley and a 2-for-5 performance by Polston. Polston, Holt, Troxell and Houska had two RBI apiece while Dearman, Spring and pinch runner Cole Wagner each scored twice.

SWOSU (4-4) opens Great American Conference play this weekend, heading to Ada to face East Central in a three-game series beginning on Friday afternoon 1:00 pm.
