Miners Drop SWOSU in Straight Sets

AUSTIN, Texas – SWOSU Volleyball suffered was unable to complete the day-night doubleheader sweep at the Hilltopper Classic as they suffered a three-set defeat at the hands of Missouri S&T in the nightcap on Friday.
 
The Miners controlled the first set, coasting to a 25-17 win after opening with the first five points of the match. The second set started similarly before SWOSU battled back and led by as many as three following an Addie Aman kill that made it 15-12. Missouri S&T quickly knotted the set back up at 16-16 and regained momentum which they rode down the stretch as they pulled away 25-21.
 
SWOSU again battled in the third set, scoring the first three points, including kills from Aman and Carly Zak, but S&T scored four straight points after being tied at 6-6 and they would not allow SWOSU to get any closer than two points the rest of the way. The Bulldogs fought off four match points late in the set, but were done in by a service error, their 10th of the match, on the final point.
 
Zak again led the attack with 11 kills, hitting .167 for the match, while also adding seven digs. Aman came on for the final two sets and put down six kills, hitting .273 while Kelsi Schmidtberger had five kills without a hitting error to finish with a .556 hitting percentage. Kayla Hebert hit .500 with three kills and led the Bulldogs with 24 assists while Kaila Lancaster had a team-best 20 digs in the match.
 
The defeat drops the Bulldogs to 1-2 on the year, but they have a chance to even their record on Saturday morning as they conclude the Hilltopper Classic against Franklin Pierce at noon in Austin.
