Walkoff Triumph Highlights Softball’s Senior Day

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball concluded their 2015 season on Saturday by completing a suspended game from Friday before playing two additional games against Southern Arkansas. The Muleriders completed a 12-5 victory in the suspended game before SWOSU won 13-12 in walkoff fashion prior to an SAU 17-5 victory in the finale.

Southern Arkansas 12, SWOSU 5 (Game Suspended from Friday)
Box Score

The game was resumed in the midst of a nine-run fourth inning by Southern Arkansas that proved to be the difference. The Bulldogs scored three runs in fifth inning, but they were unable to get any closer as the Muleriders finished off the win in the series opener.

Adrienne Martinez finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while Ashley Filer was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Taylor Eaves took the loss, dropping to 1-9 on the year.

SWOSU 13, Southern Arkansas 12 (8 inn.)
Box Score

Despite giving up an 8-0 lead after two innings, the Bulldogs prevailed in the bottom of the eighth inning when Filer hit a two-out single to left field, scoring Miranda McDonald for the game-winning run. The win was the fourth league victory of the year for SWOSU and their first win over an opponent other than Northwestern Oklahoma State since February 14.

Martinez and McDonald each had three hits in the game, but it was Martinez who seemed to break the game wide open with a grand slam in the second inning, helping the Bulldogs build their early lead. The hit also helped her break the single-season school record for home runs (13) and runs batted in (43).

Southern Arkansas scored in five consecutive frames, including one run in the top of the seventh inning that tied the game at 12-120, forcing extra innings. Laura Wilson worked out of jams in both the seventh and eighth innings, setting the stage for the Bulldogs victory. McDonald singled and the Muleriders walked Martinez before both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.

Facing a 2-1 pitch, Filer found the one she wanted and slugged to the fence in left center for the game-winning run as the Bulldogs picked up the 13-12 victory. Wilson earned the win and improved to 3-4 on the year after pitching the last two frames.

Southern Arkansas 17, SWOSU 5
Box Score

The Muleriders quickly bounced back and scored in every inning but the fourth as they claimed the series with a commanding victory in the finale. SWOSU got a leadoff home run from Kendall Smith in the second inning and three runs in the third, including a two-run single from Smith, but they were unable to keep SAU off the board for long.

Smith was the highlight in the game, going 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in her final game wearing the Bulldog uniform. Samantha Perry went 2-for-3 while Ashley Dunigan had the Bulldogs only other hit. Kaity Rash lasted just one inning in the circle but suffered the loss, concluding her season at 0-3.
