WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Bulldogs committed nine errors over two games, including seven in the first of the day, as they went 0-2 in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. SWOSU was run-ruled 15-2 in Game 1, while they showed improvement but fell late 8-5 in Game 2.
Game 1: HSU 15, SWOSU 2 (5 Inn.)Box Score SWOSU struggled out of the gate in the first contest, committing three errors in the first inning. As a result of the mistakes, Henderson State carried a 5-0 lead after the first inning. The Bulldogs' predicament was compounded as the team made another two errors in the top of the third that doubled the Lady Reddies' lead to 10-0. HSU would tack on an additional run to push the lead to 11-0 after three innings.
The bats finally came alive for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the fourth.
Miranda McDonald hit a triple down the left field line, which was followed up immediately by an RBI double to centerfield by
Adrienne Martinez.
Maci Brown then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop after Martinez had moved to third courtesy of a single to right centerfield by
Ashley Jones. Brown's connection brought in Martinez, but that would be all the scoring for SWOSU as HSU plated another four runs in the top of the fifth before retiring SWOSU in order.
Rileigh Ricken took her fourth loss of the season, but gave up just two earned runs. Offensively, the Bulldogs only recorded four hits, one each by Martinez, McDonald, Brown and
Tori Hawk.
Game 2: HSU 8, SWOSU 5Box Score In the second game, SWOSU struck first in the bottom of the second.
Ashley Dunigan got the Bulldogs going with a double to left field.
Kendall Smith was hit by a pitch two batters later, and the runners advanced to second and third respectively after a wild pitch.
Ashley Filer then hit a looping single just over the HSU first baseman that brought in Dunigan. Makenzy Payne followed that up with a single of her own to left field that plated Smith. Hawk then capped off the scoring with a triple to right center that scored both Filer and Payne. SWOSU went into the third leading 4-0.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Lady Reddies were able to erase the four-run advantage in the top of the third with a four run inning of their own. Henderson State then took the lead 5-4 in the top of the fifth.
SWOSU, however, was able to respond with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning to take the game to 5-5.
Samantha Perry forced HSU's Courtney Warren to make a decision by attempting a steal with Martinez on third. Warren chose poorly and made an error on the throw which allowed Martinez to reach home.
The Lady Reddies would recover the lead in the top of the sixth with two runs before adding an insurance run in the top of the seventh. SWOSU only managed one base runner in the final two frames.
SWOSU used all four of their pitchers, but it was Ricken who picked up her second loss of the day to move to 3-5. The Bulldogs did show improvement at the plate, recording six hit. Filer led SWOSU, going 2-3 with a run and an RBI.
As a result of the losses, SWOSU fell to 0-6 in the Great American Conference. They will return to the field tomorrow for another doubleheader against Henderson State. First pitch is slated for 12 pm.
