Lady Dawgs Suffer Setback on the Road to Ouachita Baptist

Box Score

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – A tightly contested match between SWOSU and Ouachita Baptist ended in favor of the hosts on Thursday night inside Vining Arena with the Lady Tigers emerging 80-77 victors.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the game on a 9-2 run and scored the first seven points of the game thanks to five quick points by Korina Chapman. The Lady Tigers answered with a 10-0 spurt of their own over the next three minutes to take their first lead of the night 15-14 with 11:44 left to play in the first half. The two teams would briefly swap leads, but OBU got as far as 24-18 before SWOSU once again began to find their rhythm. The Lady Dags used a 10-2 run over the final 8:01 of the half to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room, capped by a Nina Gregory 3-pointer with 59 seconds left in the half.

Within the first 3:14 of the second half the teams swapped leads four times, with SWOSU emerging with a slim lead, 35-34, with 16:46 left in the game. OBU eventually found their shot and expanded their lead to five with 10:23 remaining. Kimmi Sawatzk gave SWOSU back the lead with 8:22 on the clock with a make from long range, but the teams would once again trade the lead in the hotly contested game. Eventually, a 3-point shot, one of the nine made by OBU in the second half, gave the Lady Tigers the lead for good with 3:24 remaining.

"We didn't come out in the second half with the intensity we needed to earn a conference road victory," Head Coach Kelsi Musick said following the defeat. "They shot the ball better than we did in the second half and we were careless with the ball and not as active as we needed to be defensively to slow them down."

Chapman lead the way with 14 points and six rebounds while three other Lady Dawgs finished with double figures. Freshmen Jade Jones and Morgan Vogt both finished with 12 points and Chelsea Bates finished with 10. Jessica Penner was strong on the glass for SWOSU with 14 boards, including seven offensive rebounds.

SWOSU plays their final road game of the season on Saturday, Feb. 14 when they take on Southern Arkansas in Magnolia, Ark., at 1 PM.
