Poor Shooting Dooms Lady Bulldogs in Conference Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – On a night where SWOSU hit just two 3-pointers, the Lady Bulldogs saw themselves on the wrong side of a 94-73 decision in their Great American Conference opener against No. 18 Arkansas Tech inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
 
The Golden Suns raced out to a 29-18 lead after the first quarter, but the Lady Dawgs were able to narrow the gap in the second quarter. The teams traded baskets to open the second frame, with Morgan Vogt hitting a layup before Jade Jones splashed in a jumper in the paint. SWOSU closed out the half on a 9-4 run thanks to baskets by Hailey Tucker and Jones, with Jennifer Williams finding the bottom of the basket as well.
 
The second half again belonged to Arkansas Tech. SWOSU was outscored 46-34 as the Lady Bulldogs shot just 27.8 percent from the field over the final two frames.
 
"We need to come out ready to play," said SWOSU head coach Kelsi Musick. "We missed a lot of lay ups and free throws tonight. We'll regroup and starting prepping for Harding on Saturday."
 
Williams led the team with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including both of SWOSU makes from beyond the arc. Jones and Vogt also reached double figures, pouring in 15 and 11 points respectively. Jessica Penner led the battle on the boards, pulling down 14 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds.
 
The Lady Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. inside the Pioneer Center for a conference tilt against Harding.
