SWOSU Soccer Drops Ouachita from Unbeaten Ranks

Box Score (html)

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Following over two hours of weather delays, the Bulldogs earned a 1-0 decision over the Great American Conference-leading Ouachita Baptist Tigers through Payton Warren's late goal. SWOSU handed the Tigers their first loss in conference play, and are now one of just two teams that has yet to lose against GAC opposition.

Warren's goal came in the 82nd minute and put the Dawgs up in a game that appeared destined for extra time. It was the senior's first goal since her freshman when she scored against Ouachita in a 4-2 victory in Weatherford on October 28, 2012.

The first half ended 0-0, despite one good chance from each side near the end of the half. Samantha Nunez found herself in alone against the Tigers' keeper Lauren Llanes. A slightly overpowered shot clanged off the crossbar, and SWOSU was unable to capitalize on the rebound. Following that, Courtney Flores pulled off an impressive kick save at point-blank range with one second remaining on a shot by Bryson Thomas to preserve the score line at the break.

SWOSU dialed the pressure up a notch in the second half of play as the outshot the Tigers 12-3. The Dawgs once again thought they had the lead secured when a ball that skipped over the head of an OBU defender found Cori Kelly in alone with the keeper. Unfortunately, Kelly's shot clanged off the underside of the crossbar and out.

It came late, but SWOSU finally took the lead thanks to the individual work of Warren. Her shot from outside the box took a fortunate deflection off the back of a Tigers defender that put Llanes out of position. The ball trickled over the line to give SWOSU the 1-0 advantage they had been searching for all match.

Courtney Flores and the defense of Amaris Garcia, Kylee Bertrand, Dajhane Turner and Erica Brunet picked up their fifth clean sheet in six games. The all-freshman back line did well to bottle up reigning GAC Offensive Player of the Year Haley Hatcher, who only managed two shots on goal over 90 minutes of action. Flores finished the match with three saves.

SWOSU (7-2-1, 3-0-1 GAC) moves into a tie for first place with Harding on points with 10 to their credit as a result of the victory on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs now face a three-game road swing, starting with Southern Nazarene on Thursday, October 8 at 7 pm in Bethany, Oklahoma.
