SWOSU Suffers Setback on the Road to Henderson State

Box Score

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Lady Bulldogs visited Henderson State at the Duke Wells Center on Thursday night looking for their third straight win in conference play, but found themselves on the wrong side of an 85-73 decision.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes and eight ties. SWOSU's largest lead came with 4:32 left in the game when Chelsea Bates made both her shots from the free throw line to go up by three, 30-27. The Lady Reddies took the lead back almost immediately on back-to-back 3-point shots, and finished the half up 44-42.

Henderson State came out hot at the start of the second half, building a ten point cushion and scoring the first eight points of the half. Bates tried to spark the offense by finishing at the rim and completing the three point play, but HSU's lead held for the remainder of the half.

Bates finished with a team-high 26 points, tying her season-high, and also had seven rebounds. Jade Jones chipped in with 13 points, while Jessica Penner poured in ten points and had eight boards. Korina Chapman finished with a team-high 11 rebounds.

"We made too many mistakes tonight," SWOSU Coach Kelsi Musick said following the game. "We were a little bit stale in the second half and we didn't guard well in transition, allowing them to get too many easy buckets on the break. Our shooting also didn't go our way. I thought we got some good looks, but the difference in the game was Henderson State made their shots and we didn't."

SWOSU's three-game road trip continues on Saturday when they head to Monticello, Ark., to take on Arkansas-Monticello. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 PM.
