WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Kimmi Sawatzky scored a game-high 22 points and
McKinsey Schumpert recorded a double-double as the Lady Bulldogs withstood a late run from Mid-America Christian and earned an 81-74 exhibition victory on Friday night at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
Sawatzky played a full 40 minutes and hit 7-of-15 field goal attempts – including 4-of-7 three pointers – to lead SWOSU, who collectively hit on 39% of their field goals and threes. It was Schumpert, however, who put the Lady Dawgs up 13, 69-56, with 6:54 to play before MACU made a late push. The Evangels outscored SWOSU 16-5 over the next four minutes and got within two at 74-72 with 2:13 to play.
Chelsea Bates stopped the run with a layup and a pair of free throws and
Jennifer Williams polished it off at the free throw line and SWOSU concluded exhibition season 1-1.
Sawatzky finished with a great line of 22 points, seven rebounds and eight assists while Schumpert's final line included 10 points and 11 rebounds. Williams scored 12 points in her home debut despite struggles from the free throw line (6-of-14) and
Jade Jones also reached double figures with 11 points.
The Lady Bulldogs open the regular season next Thursday, November 20, against Arkansas-Fort Smith with a 5:30 pm tip time scheduled at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
