Bulldogs Draw Harding in Conference Clash

Box Score

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Courtney Flores had three saves as she earned her third clean sheet of the campaign as the Bulldogs drew Harding at home in conference action. The teams played through 110 minutes with no breakthrough.

SWOSU got out of the gates quickly, accounting for three of the first four shots taken in the game. Eva Rule received a nice cross from Lauren Williams that went just to the left of the Lady Bisons' post in the fourth minute. Payton Warren followed that up in the seventh minute when she found herself behind the Harding backline, but her foot slip and she sent her shot well wide of the goal. Jasmine Heffley finished the flurry in the ninth minute when she attempted a bicycle kick, but it also went wide.

There was a lull in the action until the 37th minute when Cori Kelly earned the first shot-on-goal of the contest, forcing Harding keeper Kaitlyn Miller into a low save. Olivia Butler followed up with her own effort that was blocked by a HU defender in the 40th minute. Ashley Trotter then took a shot that went wide of the goal in the 41st minute.

Harding had been kept quiet for the bulk of the first half, but had two good chances in the 45th minute. Audrey Adkison sent in a corner that connected with the forehead of Melita Sutherland. Flores was quick to clear the ball off her line, but gave up a rebound which Sutherland was first to for another header towards goal. Flores performed a double save to preserve the shutout. The whistle blew as Aimi Mumford's last ditch shot sailed high over the bar.

The second half started in much the same way as the first, with Kelly forcing Miller into another shave inside of five minutes. Harding followed that effort up in the 51st minute with a shot by Samantha Jay which was blocked. The two sides would trade possession, with neither team truly threatening, for the next 15 minutes.

In the 67th minute, SWOSU had thought they found the breakthrough off Rule's fine effort. Heffley beat her mark after a battle along the end line and dribbled along the line towards goal. She sent in a low ball to Rule who rifled in a shot that clanged off the crossbar and out. The remainder of the half was all SWOSU, but after 90 minutes the teams were tied and were headed towards extra time.

Within two minutes of the restart, Shelley Mueller had forced Miller into another save. Harding answered with two shots of their own, requiring Flores to make one save. The first overtime period expired without a winning goal.

The teams came out for the second overtime, and again it was SWOSU on the front foot. Williams' shot was saved by Miller. It was the only shot of the period for SWOSU. Harding also recorded one shot, but it was high. The referee signaled for the end of the period and SWOSU drew their second game in four tries.

Kelly's four shots were enough to tie her with Ashley McMahon for tenth all-time in program history with 83. Her two shots on goal also place her in seventh for shots-on-goal at 44, one ahead of Jamie Hilterbran.
Flores and the backline of Williams, Alyssa Bagley, Charlotte Eastman and Randa Castleberry earned their third shutout of the campaign. Flores now moves into a tie Southern Nazarene's Natasha Fuentes for the most clean sheets in the Great American Conference this season. The Bulldogs are now 1-0-2 this season when they prevent the other team from scoring a goal.

Action resumes Saturday when SWOSU welcomes Ouachita Baptist to the Athletic Complex at 1 PM.
