WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Seven players connected from three-point range as the SWOSU women's basketball team knocked down 16 treys and cruised to a season-opening 84-65 victory over Colorado Christian on Friday night at Rankin Williams Fieldhouse. The game was part of the first day of the SWOSU Classic.
SWOSU jumped on top of the Cougars from the beginning, taking a 27-10 lead midway through the first half before CCU closed the half strong and trailed just 38-32 at the break.
The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the second half and held a double-digit lead most of the half, extending the lead as high as 21 points on two occasions. All ten players who played 10 or more minutes scored at least three points as the Lady Bulldogs claimed their fourth consecutive season-opening victory.
Preseason All-American
Michelle Fisher performed at that level, opening her senior season with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the field and connecting on 4-of-8 attempts from long range.
Jessica Penner and
Chelsea Bates each added 13 points while
Kylie Boggess fell one point short of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.
Jaimee Cohen and
Sarah Mendoza each had a team-high five assists for SWOSU who assisted on 25 of their 30 made baskets in the game. The Lady Dawgs shot 50.8% (30-of-59) from the field and 55.2% (16-of-29) from three-point range while holding the Cougars under 40% in both categories.
SWOSU will now turn around to face No. 13-ranked Colorado Mesa on Saturday evening at 5:30 pm. CMU defeated Northwestern Oklahoma State 69-42 in Friday's opening game of the Classic.
