WEATHERFORD, Okla. – After cruising through the first two sets of Tuesday's 'Dig Pink' match against Cameron, the Southwestern Oklahoma State University team was pushed to the limit before downing the Aggies in five sets by scores of 25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 20-25, 15-8.
The win is the first in SWOSU history over Cameron, a former foe from the Lone Star Conference.
In the first two sets, the Bulldogs played as well as they have all season, putting down 15 kills in each set with just six hitting errors. Cameron battled back and took early leads in both the fourth and fifth sets that were enough for the Aggies to hold off any SWOSU rally.
Once it reached a deciding fifth set, SWOSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back. The Dawgs never allowed Cameron to close the gap within three and a
Brandy Mader kill ended the match at 15-8.
Carly Zak put down a season-high 21 kills for the Bulldogs and hit .217 for the match while
Joey Collins, who was named Great American Conference Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, added 17 kills while committing just three hitting errors. Collins also had a double-double with 13 digs.
Alison Cole and
Christina Darras each had nine kills for the Bulldogs, Mader had a team-high 28 assists while
Breann Whitaker added 26, and
Kaila Lancaster led SWOSU with 21 digs.
The non-conference action continues for SWOSU this weekend at the Missouri Southern Regional Crossover in Joplin, Mo. The Bulldogs will face four foes from the MIAA on Friday and Saturday.
