Honored as the best all-around athlete at Walters High School in 1940, Graham entered Southwestern with great acclaim. He played both football and baseball at Southwestern before his college career was interrupted by World War II when he joined the Navy Air Force. He spent 40 months in the Navy and 17 months in the South Pacific flying combat missions before being discharged with the rank of Lieutenant. He returned to Southwestern and lettered again in football, track and baseball before graduating in 1947. He then served as athletic director and head coach for Weatherford High School for 12 years before moving on to Clovis High School in New Mexico. At Clovis, he had only one losing season in 26 years and won several state championships, including five-in-a-row during one stretch.
