WEATHERFORD, Okla. – A recent study from the SWOSU Business Enterprise Center (BEC) estimates that events held at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center have brought almost $8.5 million in business to the Weatherford area from 2014-16.
The Pioneer Cellular Event Centers hosts concerts, comedy shows, banquets, conferences, meetings, athletic tournaments, athletic camps, expos and other events on an annual basis. The report estimates that 84,180 people attended these events during the three-year span, with those guests spending approximately $8,464,288 on food, lodging, fuel, entertainment and shopping while they were in Weatherford.
"The Pioneer Cellular Event Center has enjoyed a tremendous three-year start here in western Oklahoma," SWOSU President Randy Beutler said. "We look forward to an even better future for this facility."
According to the report, 23,825 guests visited Weatherford in 2014 – the building's first year of operation – with an economic impact of $2,396,795. In 2015, there were 21,100 visitors with an impact of $2,118,440. In 2016 – which coincided with the arrival of Nate Downs as the director of the Pioneer Cellular Event Center – the center brought 39,255 visitors to the area while boosting the local economy with $3,949,053.
"The Pioneer Cellular Event Center has been successful because of the teamwork and synergy of the entire SWOSU community," Downs said. "It is undeniable that this facility is a huge part of the SWOSU Athletics program and it is also undeniable that the facility is the premiere event center in western Oklahoma and the pride of Weatherford citizens. We have a clear vision of what we want the Pioneer Cellular Event Center to be for SWOSU and the community, which is to put on the best events that we can."
According to a 2013 report by the U.S. Travel Association, every $91,640 spent in Oklahoma by domestic travelers generated one job in 2012, which amounts to 31 jobs generated by the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
